Folly Farm

Folly Farm

Property Desrciption

Folly Farm’s original residence dates to 1834. 30 years ago, the owners carefully restored and modernized it, respecting its Hudson Valley Federal architecture. While renovating, the owners’ family lived in the three-bedroom guest house across from the main residence. Overlooking the pond, the guest house is situated to allow privacy yet proximity to the main house. As the family’s needs and interests grew on the 200-acre farm, additions to the house, barns and improvements to the land were made: A farm road; stone walls quarried from the farm fields; a hay barn; run-in sheds; water and fencing for a 100-head Devon cattle herd were added. An indoor sports center with tennis court was installed in the main barn hayloft. The one-acre deep water pond was improved for swimming. The main house was enlarged to include a mud room entrance, a first-floor full bath, a formal dining room with views over fields, and a large music room surrounded by French doors with unobstructed views of the pastures and pond where recitals for up to 50 people have been held. The library and living room on either side of the front hall (each with a fireplace) are intimate spaces true to the early 19th c period. The gracious original mahogany staircase leads to the 2nd floor landing with sitting area with fan window which separates two bedrooms on one side from the elegant master bedroom suite with fireplace and spacious dressing room. The 16’ x32’ eat-in and cooks’ kitchen with butler’s pantry leads to a spacious and fully equipped office (with fireplace) affording private work space or a “farm office” with its own entrance. The kitchen’s large fireplace (one of six in the house), wide heart pine board floors, cathedral ceiling and large windows facing in all directions create informal entertaining and family space. The stone and brick terrace just outside extend this feeling to the outdoors. Folly Farm has hosted large field and farm events for the Dutchess Land Conservancy, the American Devon Cattle Association, among other organizations. Whether the annual Memorial Day baseball game (regulation size field), a teenage graduation weekend with nine-hole par-3 golf course and swimming and boating, engagement party, or simply to enjoy dining outdoors with the sounds of nature and the moon over the pond, only your imagination limits the many uses and pastimes you, your family and friends will have on this unique property.
